The powersteering pump was making horrible noises, so I decided to replace it, the lines, and add a filter.
I also decided to put a larger pulley on for less power assist.

1. The old nasty power steering pump in place. |
|

2. The pulley, which must come off. |

3. This black loop of metal tubing serves as the power steering cooler. |
|

4. You can see how dirty this area is. Those lines go into the rack. |

5. Pump from below. It has obviously been leaking. |
|

6. Draining the pump by hand. |

7. Goodbye nasty old fluid. |
|

8. Pulley removal tool on the pulley. |

9. Whole pulley removal/installation kit plus some extra tools of mine. |
|

10. Old pump minus the pulley. |

11. Three ford power steering pulleys. Left to right are V8 Mustang, V6 Mustang, 4cyl Mustang. |
|

12. Stacked. The smaller the pulley, the faster the pump goes. The faster the pump, the more the boost in assist. |

13. Stacked again. Ford is known for its overboosted power steering systems, so I wanted the largest pulley I could get. |
|

14. Old pump next to the new pump. |

15. New pump in place with the large pulley and new belt. |
I am generally happy with the ammount of steering assist I get now, but sometimes it still seems like too much. The pulley is still a little loud, but much better than it was. It's not bad enough to make me want to go through the messy business of replacing the pump again.
