The powersteering pump was making horrible noises, so I decided to replace it, the lines, and add a filter.

I also decided to put a larger pulley on for less power assist.

1. The old nasty power steering pump in place.

2. The pulley, which must come off.

3. This black loop of metal tubing serves as the power steering cooler.

4. You can see how dirty this area is. Those lines go into the rack.

5. Pump from below. It has obviously been leaking.

6. Draining the pump by hand.

7. Goodbye nasty old fluid.

8. Pulley removal tool on the pulley.

9. Whole pulley removal/installation kit plus some extra tools of mine.

10. Old pump minus the pulley.

11. Three ford power steering pulleys. Left to right are V8 Mustang, V6 Mustang, 4cyl Mustang.

12. Stacked. The smaller the pulley, the faster the pump goes. The faster the pump, the more the boost in assist.

13. Stacked again. Ford is known for its overboosted power steering systems, so I wanted the largest pulley I could get.

14. Old pump next to the new pump.

15. New pump in place with the large pulley and new belt.

I am generally happy with the ammount of steering assist I get now, but sometimes it still seems like too much. The pulley is still a little loud, but much better than it was. It's not bad enough to make me want to go through the messy business of replacing the pump again.
