This is the second Innocenti 950 Spider I've put a page together for.
This one was an auction car. Here's the auction text:
Innocenti is the Italian manufacturing company best known for producing the Lambretta line of motor scooters after WW2. In 1961, The Innocenti Car Company began building BMC products under license and introduced the Ghia-styled Innocenti 950 Spider sports car, a rebodied version of the Austin-Healey MK1 “Frogeye” Sprite. Functional differences between the Innocenti and Sprite include larger door openings, lower sill height, extra cockpit space and windup windows. Running gear was essentially the Mini’s 948 cc engine making for economical power. We understand that only 647 Innocenti 950 Spider models were produced using the original MK1 Sprite specifications making car this a truly rare piece of both Italian and British motorcar history.
Owned by a Medical Doctor from the late 1960s until 2003, our example was originally sold in France, then made its way to the US through proper import from Mexico in 1969. Dash plaques indicate an active participation in various car club events in the early 1970s. In 1973, the original Austin engine and transmission were replaced with Datsun 1200 units.
The car has been sitting idle for a number of years, so a total restoration is indicated. The exterior of the car shows surface rust because the body panels were partially stripped, however the sheet metal is straight, does not suffer from significant corrosion, and appears to have never been in an accident. The interior is substantially complete, including seats, instruments, gauges, switches, steering wheel, horn button, inner door pulls and rear view mirror. The exterior mirror has only its base. The folding top frame is sound, door glass and window winders are intact and undamaged as are the vent wings, but the windshield is cracked and requires a replacement that we understand can be obtained. The underside of the car shows typical surface rust but also appears very solid and sound in the floor pans, rocker panels and frame members. Much of the exterior trim is intact and usable, including the stainless body seam covers, side spears, door handles, rear top edging, front windshield trim, the unique Innocenti 950 badges, a full set of Innocenti hubcaps, and both bumpers. Of course, the exterior chrome items will need a replate. Also note that the tail lamp plastic lenses are missing, as is the right front signal lens.
A wealth of documentation is included with the auto, including an original but tattered owner’s manual (in French), a 227 page parts manual, the original Texas title from 1970, the 1969 IRS documentation related to import duty, several receipts and registration documents, plus various contemporary magazine articles about Innocenti Spider models.
If you are an aficionado of British motoring and Italian style, this car offers an excellent opportunity to own and enjoy a truly unique automobile. Mechanical parts are readily attainable for this automobile, but the Italian style is unique to this model. We wish the best of luck to all bidders.
