I had another busy weekend. I managed to avoid hurting my back again, which is good.

I did some more removing of stuff to test fitment of the engine, installed the water pump block-off plate (since I'm running an electric water pump), and turned the engine over by hand..

1. This motor mount comes off. We will be adapting a different style mount that gives more clearance.

2. This bracket comes off before the motor mount can. I will also have to relocate the filter.

3. With the bracket removed.

4. Lots more clearance on the passenger side.

5. Here's how it looks without the mount.

6. I removed the rubber isolator first, so I could get to some bolts.

7. That last bolt is a problem. It's right behind the turbo.

8. Note how it's rounded. I broke several swivels and extensions until I went and bought a nice new 3/8 swivel at Sears, and then I got it off.

9. You can see that the turbo elbow is located in a really bad spot.

10. So I took it off for now to continue fitting.

11. Here's the turbo impeller, and the built in wastegate.

12. I also removed the heat shields for now.

13. Here's the shifter, I'm thinking about removing the lever so its easier to get the motor in and out.

14. It's held in with a snap ring.

15. I'm about to try to turn the engine over, so I need to take out the spark plugs.

16. Off with the cover, Here are the coilpacks.

17. With the wires out of the way.

18. With the plugs out, I put some oil down in the engine to loosen it up a bit.

19. It turned pretty easily with just a ratchet on the crank. I was happy.

20. Next target is the water pump.

21. Four bolts and the fan clutch is off.

22. Now with the pulley off.

23. That impeller is nasty.

24. And there's a lot of rusty crud in there.

25. Here's the block-off plate next to the old pump.

26. Engine cleaned up with the block-off plate.

27. Closer shot of the plate. There's one extra bolt hole.

28. More stuff out of the way in the front of the engine.

29. Here's all the stuff that came off for clearance today.

30. This is about as far as I can get the engine in right now.

31. The intake manifold hits here. I'm thinking a notch.

32. And the turbo housing is up against the steering shaft firewall pass-through here.

33. When this thing is done, there's only going to be room for a 10 inch or so driveshaft. I'm going to have to figure out how to move the shifter forward somehow.

34. Just enough room to move the gas pedal over two inches, if it comes to that. Not much room for those size 13's.

Whee, lots of good progress. THe driver's side clearance for steering and such still worries me a bit.

I'm thinking a top mount conversion for the turbo. Turbo on top instead of hanging below, but that means more money, and now that I'm 95% through the home buying process, I am soon not going to have any of that.
